Philippines Brings Services to the social sector housing
An innovative project which helps the
urban poor -not by relocating people away from their source of
livelihood - but by bringing social sector housing, microfinance and
health services to the community". This was how Asian Development Bank
director described the On-site
Urban Upgrading for Vulnerable Communities of Project at a
groundbreaking ceremony today.
The event marks the start of a six-month site development project that
will benefit 525 poor families, including some who were directly
affected by a landslide tragedy in 2000 that killed more than 200
people. The project will build roads and a drainage system on a
three-hectare site.
Social Sector Infrastructure and Environment
The Government and ADB acknowledge that a robust population control
program is a prerequisite for ensuring that the gains achieved in
social sector housing development and environmental protection are sustainable
and assist in poverty reduction. The Government's commitment to this
policy is becoming more explicit as evidenced by its articulation.
Opportunities for policy dialogue in this area are thus expected to
increase and technical assistance for capacity building activities has
been programmed. Sector strategies in the social sector including the
housing, environment, will aim at preserving and further improving the
advances made in the key socioeconomic indicators in the medium term.
In addition, a key concern is balanced regional development with
attention to urban issues as the majority of Filipinos are now
residing in urban areas.
More social sector houses made available to public
The LTS authorizes the sale of
subdivision lots and condominium units in registered projects, an
indicator or development trends in the real estate industry.
Residential units covered by the LTS fall under five categories: open
market (houses costing above (P 2 million to P5 million), social
sector housing/condominium (houses worth P130,000 and below); economic
housing (houses costing above P500,000 to P2 million open market
condominium and simple subdivision.
